Corporate credit is among the largest asset classes in the world, and for most of the last two decades, in our view, it has been one of the least well served by data and technology. Equity investors have long had deep, structured, machine-readable fundamentals at their fingertips. Based on our research, credit analysts, by contrast, still spend a remarkable share of their time pulling numbers out of PDFs, rebuilding models by hand and maintaining spreadsheets that others cannot audit. Several years of work in information services, including a close study of the credit vertical, convinced us that this was a problem worth solving, and that Cognitive Credit was among the companies best positioned to solve it. Today, Summit Partners is pleased to announce our investment in Cognitive Credit, a provider of specialist corporate credit data, analytics and AI workflow tools.

Why has credit lagged? In part because it poses a challenging data problem: disclosures are non-standardized and often issuer-specific, and a meaningful share of the underlying documents live in private data rooms rather than public filings.(1)  The result, in our view, is that purpose-built data and workflow tools remain under-penetrated in the credit market relative to the size of the opportunity.

Why AI raises the value of verified data: AI has brought this into focus. In high-stakes, highly regulated workflows, such as investment decisions, advisory work and risk management, the bar for usefulness is close to perfect accuracy and a traceable path back to the source. In our view, general-purpose AI models on their own do not clear that bar, but verified, structured, auditable data can, and such data are precisely the input those workflows require to be useful in credit. We believe AI adoption increases the value of the quantitative data layer, and this is the layer Cognitive Credit has built.

What Cognitive Credit has built: Cognitive Credit provides a suite of AI workflow tools powered by near real-time, verified fundamental data and models across more than 3,500 corporate bond and syndicated loan issuers in the U.S., Europe and emerging markets, delivered through an integrated platform, API, Excel add-in and a native Claude connector. The data are audit-grade and traceable to source, which allows them to power AI-enabled workflows in use cases where the cost of error is high and accuracy and verifiability are critical. Cognitive Credit now supports analytical workflows at more than 80% of the top 25 global asset managers by AUM and all of the top 10 global debt league-table investment banks.(1)

Cognitive Credit is, in our view, the kind of business we look for in information services. The data are costly to assemble and difficult to replicate. The product is designed to become part of users’ daily work. And the team has deep familiarity with the end market. Cognitive Credit was built by credit professionals, for credit professionals, and we believe that domain expertise is evident in the product. We are proud to partner with CEO and Founder Robert Slater and his team as they work to expand coverage, deepen the platform’s AI capabilities and help credit professionals adopt AI within their workflows.

AI technology is evolving rapidly, and the full scope of its impact — including associated opportunities, risks, and regulatory implications — remains uncertain. Material risks inherent to AI initiatives include dependence on data quality and completeness, variability in model outputs, evolving compliance obligations and the execution challenges of implementing AI on legacy systems or poorly structured data. AI tools cannot substitute for sound data governance, and organizations should not assume AI will resolve underlying data quality issues.
