The AI infrastructure conversation in recent years has centered on providing compute capacity to train and serve inference for the largest models. We are not seeing signs of this slowing. In our view, though, it overlooks where much of the recent momentum is shifting as AI starts to take hold in the enterprise and countless AI-native startups offer solutions for a new era. This perspective gives us a deep appreciation for the work Runpod is doing to build the AI Developer Cloud, and today Summit Partners is thrilled to announce our investment in the company.

Compute demand is expanding rapidly, and we’re seeing that the real driver isn’t more inference calls, it’s agentic work. A single agentic workflow can consume as much compute as months of traditional inference, running across hardware types and timescales that single-purpose inference vendors cannot support. At the same time, developers and AI builders are increasingly building multi-model workflows, working to route each task to the right model for the job. This requires infrastructure that works across the full model spectrum rather than one vendor’s stack. The result is an expanding population of developers, researchers and product teams who need scalable, flexible infrastructure.

Most infrastructure investment to date has been designed for a world in which using AI means sending a steady, predictable stream of requests to a model. But the developers building real AI products today need a platform that covers the full arc of how AI gets built: experimenting with new models, fine-tuning them on proprietary data, deploying them to real users and scaling as demand grows. This is the AI Developer Cloud that Runpod is building: one platform designed to support the entire journey, rather than a separate tool bolted on at each step.

What started as a compute platform embraced by the developer community is, in our view, increasingly becoming critical infrastructure for AI-native startups and AI research teams inside major enterprises. More than one million developers have already found their way to Runpod’s platform, and that organic adoption is now pulling Runpod into the enterprise.

We are proud to partner with Zhen Lu, Pardeep Singh and the rest of the Runpod team as they build the AI Developer Cloud. The company has scaled in a capital efficient manner and is growing quickly, Summit has deep experience working with infrastructure-layer businesses over the years, and, in our view, Runpod’s AI Developer Cloud is one of the most important infrastructure layers in AI today.

‍AI technology is evolving rapidly, and the full scope of its impact — including associated opportunities, risks, and regulatory implications — remains uncertain. Material risks inherent to AI initiatives include dependence on data quality and completeness, variability in model outputs, evolving compliance obligations and the execution challenges of implementing AI on legacy systems or poorly structured data. AI tools cannot substitute for sound data governance, and organizations should not assume AI will resolve underlying data quality issues.‍
